This post is a follow-up to "Forgiveness!!! -Post 1." I want to thank the "commenter" on that post for sparking these additional (follow up) thoughts.
This truth can be overwhelming to our human understanding, and particularly our understanding of the Gospel. BUT God's forgiveness to us is ALL of grace (Eph.2:8-9; Gal.2:16; etc). It is NOT deserved by ANY of us. This of course should bring an overwhelming sense of gratitude to God for what He has done for us, and should keep us motivated to serve Him (Titus 2:11-14).
Several key Bible truths related here include:
Read: Romans 3:23 -- ALL of us (every single one of us) has sinned (transgressed God's commandments, broken God's law, not done what He has said to do, missed the mark when it comes to doing right), AND we ALL have fallen short (failed to be righteous and to do righteously).
Read: Romans 3:10 -- NONE of us are righteous.
We deserve death and hell, not life and forgiveness (see Rom.6:23; etc).
We are only justified (declared to be and then treated as righteous in God's sight) by grace, not by our own works or efforts.
God only forgives the believing sinner because of Jesus Christ, both WHO He is and WHAT He has done [see previous post]), not because there is some merit in the believing sinner. Every sinner who is saved is saved by grace (that means it is NOT deserved). Christ (and only Him) satisfied God's holy demands concerning our sin and sins (see 1John 2:1-2; Romans 3:21-28; etc).
Also, Ephesians 4:32, makes it clear that God forgives us for Christ's sake, not because of us!
Amen! and Praise Him.
